DIWALI : A FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Diwali is indeed the mother of all festivals that are celebrated in India. Any
foreign national visiting the country at this time may wonder, what’s the
fuss about bursting crackers, putting decorative lighting on houses, lighting
a diya. Boss, its Diwali time in India.
Diwali has four major occasions to celebrate, viz ‘narakchaturdashi’, laxmi
pujan’, padwa’ and ‘bhaau beej’. ‘laxmi pujan is so scacred that even the
stock exchange is running for an hour. Also called as ‘mathurat trading’.
‘laxmi pujan’ means a puja of goddess laxmi, the god of wealth. If someone
boasts to know the stock market, then ask him/ her the meaning of ‘market
capitalization’ ( market cap), PE ratio ( price to earnings ratio) and its impact
on the stock. If you get a satisfactory answer then that person knows the
market well. Otherwise, he/ she is an armature in market and needs a lot of
study.
In Diwali in every house you’ll find lot food items like ‘chiwda’, ‘sev’, ‘chkli’,
‘ladu’ etc. my colleagues in our Singapore office or in any foreign office miss
it. As a software engineer, my office has a leave on only one day. Whereas ,
school kids have a bucketful of holidays called as Diwali vacation. A funny
thing about my school was that, 1st semester exam results were declared
before Diwali. Which means, ‘diwali ke pehele diwala’. But I love this festival.
